What is discipleship?

Discipleship is learning to follow Jesus. In the Great Commission, Jesus says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20 ESV). Evangelism is the first part of discipleship, but there is more. We are called to share our lives with one another, encouraging one another in the gospel. We are to train up new believers to maturity, and we will know they are mature when they are making disciples. We want to learn from believers who are ahead of us what it looks like to follow Jesus. And we want to offer younger believers what God has shown us. Wherever you are, if you know Jesus, you are a disciple who is to be about the business of making disciples.

Discipleship occurs both intentionally and informally inside of any local church through the teaching of the word, gathering of the body, singing of spiritual songs and psalms, conversations amongst believers, celebrations, and bearing one another's burdens.

Our vision at Anchor depends on the body of Christ living out its calling. God gives some the role of equipping believers for ministry, but each believer is a minister of the gospel. Each believer is a disciple maker. Each of us is called to introduce others to Jesus and to help one another mature in him.

The primary way we facilitate intentional discipleship at Anchor Church is through Discipleship groups. Each group is meant to facilitate a deeper understanding of what it means to live in light of the gospel and to move believers towards making disciples.

More details

  • We will help connect groups together at the start of every Fall and Spring semester, especially for those who will be in a group for the first time. After being in an initial group, members are encouraged to turn around and disciple others. Guys are in groups with guys. And girls with girls!

Discipleship groups are closed groups meaning they are a committed group, so if you were going to invite a friend to a group, it would be community group.

  • 6 month commitment of weekly meeting together

  • Discipleship groups are reading Multiply, studying a book of the Bible together, memorizing Scripture, praying for one another, encouraging each other to obediently walk with Christ, and seeking to make disciples.
